Review: Horizon Forbidden West

Review: Horizon Forbidden West

Horizon Zero Dawn was the victim of poor timing. A great open-world game with lush environments and a memorable narrative that stuck to what felt like an old formula in contrast to The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, which was released a mere month later. With Forbidden West sharing a launch window with the critically revered Eldin Ring, is it destined for the same fate?

It’s not quite that simple, but underneath some old worn-out open-world design and a lackluster intro, Horizon’s latest installment offers a lot for the patient player.

Review: Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy

Review: Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy

Author: Rich Meister

I’m a comic book nerd. It’s not something I’m shy about, nor in the year 2021 is it an unusual thing. That’s why I get to write a review for a Guardians of the Galaxy video game without having to go into elicit detail about who the fuck Groot is. That’s weird, but it's also kind of amazing.

On the subject of the modern popularity of comic book characters with the success of Insomniac’s Spider-man and their Wolverine adaption on the horizon we might be gearing towards a reality where Marvel games come out every year just like MCU films. I know that might sound like a bad idea, but if they’re all more like Eidos-Montreal’s Guardians of the Galaxy and less like Crystal Dynamic’s Avengers, then it might be an exciting prospect.

Review: Jett The Farshore

Review: Jett The Farshore

Author: Rich Meister

Earth or a planet like it (it’s never made explicitly clear) is doomed, so the brave scouts set out for the Wyld of the Farshore. It’s not a new idea, but Jett: The Farshore presents it through a fresh lens and some interesting layers. Tor is a mysterious mountain that calls out to these desperate few from across the stars like a signal beacon via the Hymnwave.

See, the people of Jett’s world haven’t just scouted a new planet that might make a good home; their spiritual leaders have prophecized it. As the first scout team to set foot on The Farshore, your team has to establish a base camp and learn all you can about the flora and fauna of this strange new world.

Review: Kena: Bridge of Spirits

Over the past week, I’ve seen a lot of people in and around the games media refer to Kena: Bridge of Spirits as a “great PS2 game.” It’s a fair comparison, but I think looking at Kena as merely an old style of game does it a disservice. Sure we don’t regularly get this brand of third-person action platformer anymore. Still, Kena excels at it and does so while bringing a Pixar level of charm to its characters and environments, even if it is a little rough around the edges.

Review: Final Fantasy VII Remake INTERmission (Yuffie DLC)

Review: Final Fantasy VII Remake INTERmission (Yuffie DLC)

Final Fantasy VII Remake is finally out on PS5. I could spend a whole article talking about how it runs on the new console and the mere breath of performance updates, but that’s not what this review is about. Instead, we’re here to talk about INTERmission, the Yuffie-centric DLC that dropped alongside the new port. It’s a side story first, but a fun one packed with familiar characters for long-time fans and one of the best mini-games Final Fantasy as a whole has cooked up in ages.
