Tell Me Why feels like two loosely joined ideas. It’s a grounded story about rekindling lost relationships, loss, and personal identity, but it’s also trying to be a supernatural Twin Peaks-esque thriller. It doesn’t handle either thing particularly badly, but the more supernatural elements often feel at odds with the otherwise incredibly grounded and drama-filled story. The characters are fantastic and likable, but I can feel myself getting sucked out whenever weird supernatural forces are slammed into the equation.
Review: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 & 2
While the first two games, originally released in 1999 and 2000, are still pretty good mechanically, the blocky early PSone graphics haven’t exactly aged like a fine wine. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 & 2 Remastered fix more than just outdated looks, though. They add all of the later games' trappings in the series to make playing those classic levels feel better than ever. The additional tricks and quality of life changes end of making the games feel more mechanically like THPS3, arguably the best in the series.
Review: Avengers
Marvel’s Avengers is a confusing game. On the surface, it’s easy to dismiss. I mean who could blame you, the marketing made it look about as bland as it can get at it’s lowest. Every time Avengers does something great and blows you away a baffling bad choice is waiting around the corner to make you question who would even make this. Cap and friends have the potential to be great, but in its current state, Avengers leaves the player frustrated and wanting.
Review: Battletoads
This is a review I was unsure I’d even end up writing. The weird part is I feel so overwhelmingly positive on this experience that I couldn’t wait to get my thoughts down. So get ready, here’s the surprising truth. The new Battletoads is...good. It’s simple, funny, has fantastic art and a bumpin soundtrack. It manages to take the rocky history of the decidedly bad NES game that came before and make the joke before the player can. It’s not a deep and complicated experience, but it’s charming and harkens back to the sort of games you would see drop in the early days of Xbox Live Arcade.
